We had a class discussion today of what art is so I decided to ask you guys.

Ahh! The Definition of Art... is there such a thing? lol.
I was told it is when something is done to perfection, but this is such a broad thing: "Art". Anything from scribbles, to doodles, to portraits can be called art.
What did the discussion lead to, Chris?

Cool looking t-shirts is not art. Same applies to doodles in my book.
Art is something that has no practical use. If it does then it's craft not art!

No practical use???
Architecture is considered an art, and that obviously has some use to it.
Cooking is considered an art, and again that is a practical use.
Also, craft doesn't necessarily mean "practical use". My sis does cross-stitching and those things are for display only, just like paintings.

Cooking and architecture are art careers/majors. What they create isn't art though.
So, are you saying that cross-stitching isn't art? It is if it's just there to be stared at but if shes using it for decoration purposes then it's craft.

not meaning to patronise or whatever but the way that you speak as in its changing from how people are supposed to spell etc, and like that could be considered as art.. using "tooh" instead of "to", youre making the language you use your own and even if you dont really think about it and you just do it cos its fun to -- cos i'm not thinking for a second you genuinely think that its spelt "tooh" -- its still some kind of conscious thing, and i just think its really wonderfulll 
just like smileys.. they're a representation of an emotion - just like caligraphy (which relates to what i just said) is a representation of some kind of a meaning..
